The Chaplaincy at Scranton Prep is concerned with the religious formation of Prep’s students, particularly on the experiential level, and is an integral part of the school’s life. The Chaplaincy functions as a team ministry and includes a Jesuit as well as lay teachers who plan, direct, and evaluate its programs. Members of the Chaplaincy staff are also available to the students several periods of each school day.
Functioning within the Roman Catholic tradition, Chaplaincy programs seek to foster the spiritual development of each Prep student. In order to facilitate this religious growth, Chaplaincy provides for the regular celebration of the Eucharist through daily Mass in the school chapel, homeroom liturgies, and school-wide community celebrations throughout the year. Much of its work centers on retreats and days of recollection as well as pastoral counseling. The retreats and recollections are required of all Catholic students. Large numbers of students of other faith traditions participate because of the quality of ecumenical sensitivity present within each of the programs. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is readily available anytime by appointment. Special attention for private confessions is given during Advent and Lent.
