SUMMER READING PROGRAM

As educators of college-bound students, we have and should have an especial commitment to the development and refinement of young and growing minds. To this end, the Summer Reading Program, fostering and nurturing this intellectual growth, reflects and is predicated on the belief that education is a continuous, on-going process, not limited nor circumscribed by the September-to June constriction. A three-month respite from formal academic training should not equate to or play itself out as three months of a mind lying fallow; neglecting an active pursuit of knowledge about the world or about one’s self for any period of time is not an option. Therefore, summer reading offers students an extraordinary opportunity to engage in developing and expanding the habits of reading and learning that will influence their lives for decades, if not for an entire lifetime. Quite simply, the mark of an educated person is to be well read.
